Yorktown NY Real Estate
Yorktown NY was first inhabited by the Native American tribes of the Mohegan, Osceola, Amwalk, Kitchawan and Mohansic. Many of these names are now the names of local places. In 1683 Stephanus Van Cortlandt purchased his first tract of land from the natives and by 1697 he had acquired 80,000 acres. That year the town was called the Manor of Cortlandt. Almost a hundred years later it was renamed Yorktown after the victory at Yorktown, Virginia during the Revolutionary War.
Today Yorktown has rolling hills and farms along with residential and commercial areas. Over 1,400 acres have been designated towards parks and recreation, making outdoor activities endless. The Taconic State Parkway runs north and south through the town making commuting easy for its residents. The Metro North Trains stations of Croton-Harmon, Mount Kisco, Pleasantville and Cortlandt are used in order to travel into Grand Central Station in New York City. The Jefferson Valley Mall is also in Yorktown and has over 90 stores.
