Somers NY Real Estate

Somers was first inhabitated by the Kitchawank Indians who were part of the Mohegan tribe.  They called the land Amapaugh, which means “fresh water fish.”  In 1697 the King of England granted the land to Van Cortland of New York City.  Settlers from neighboring areas came to Somers, then called Stephentown.  There was another Stephentown so the name was changed to Somerstown and then to its current name, Somers in 1808. Somers was named in memory of Lieutenant Richard Somers who died during the Tripolitan War.

In the 1840s the railroad came to bypass Somers and the town was able to grow rapidly.  During this time Hachaliah Bailey brought an African Elephant, “Old Bet” to Somers to work the farm but attracted many people.  As a result, she decided to tour with her elephant all over the northeast and attracted others with exotic animals.  This is how the modern day circus began.  The Elephant Hotel, built by Bailey in memory of Old Bet is still standing today.  Somers NY is now known as the “cradle of the American Circus.”

In the 1980s both IBM and PepsiCo built complexes in Somers and this enabled the town to expand.  Somers NY has its own public school system and is close to the Metro North Purdys, Goldens Bridge and Katonah train stations.
