Mahopac NY Real Estate
Mahopac NY was originally inhabited by the Algonquin tribe, the Wappinger Native Americans. The Wappingers Native Americans lived east of the Hudson river and Wappinger actually means “Easterners.” This tribe fought with the British during the French and Indian War. They named Mahopac, which means “The Lake of the Great Serpent” or “Serpent Lake” after Lake Mahopac. By the 1700s settlers started moving into this area and essentially pushed the Native Americans off their land. Today the Wappinger Tribe has vanished but many of their names, including Mahopac have remained.
Mahopac soon became a famous resort town for the residents of New York City because of it’s beauty and proximity. By the 1900s, the town changed again and more people were becoming full time residents. Mahopac has its own school district, firehouse and post office. It is close to the Metro North Croton Falls train station and has an abundance of local shops and fine restaurants.
